Prayers during tragedy

BLOG FRIENDS
I am calling on you for support and prayers. A precious, precious family in our neighborhood lost their beautiful 21 year old daughter this morning.

Layla Nicole Ghabayen

Please understand this was not morning like 2 AM, this is like 7 AM. If I am not mistaken her grandmother was in the vehicle with her as well. She is stable.
The thing is, this has affected my child in a way I could NEVER imagine. I have held off telling her, posting here, or on facebook because one, I dreaded it so and two, I had been told that the other children did not know yet.
The Princess is friends with one of Layla's sisters.  Layla was always at our neighborhood pool during the summer and often with her sister that the Princess played with. So the Princess knew Layla well. She is still crying in her bed and truth be told so am I. Which is why I am not still holding her. I don't want her to see me upset. I knew Layla. I know  her Mom, the family for almost 4 years.  I drove Layla's sister to brownies with us.  I cannot imagine the HORROR this family is going through. They need your prayers!

Now onto Foodie Friday! 

 This week we are making onion soup.

My Uncle JW's Onion soup! 

He taught us this amazing trick a few years ago.

You are NEVER going to believe how simple and delicious this is! First you need an onion for each serving. I have found that the fresher the onion the better. Also  Spanish onions tend to work best for this. they are juicier.

After you have peeled them you are going to quarter them and then again BE SURE TO NOT CUT THROUGH completely.

gently tuck a beef bouillon cube (the ones in the little foil wrappers) down inside the center of the onion. If your onion is on the large side, you will need to use two cubes. Place in the center of a piece of aluminum foil and fold it to create a little pocket.

Do this for each onion.

Then place all of your pockets into a casserole dish

 

Place in the oven at 350 

for an hour

 

Then open your pockets and pour into a bowl

and you have this

If your onion was a little dry 

you can add a little water and pop it back in the oven for about 15 minutes to warm. 

Top with your choice of provolone cheese or mozzarella and a piece of french bread

ENJOY!

did see his shadow and predicted 6 more weeks of winter.

However, the ever so gallant southern gentleman

The new essentials: bread, milk, and merlot

 My brother and his wife live in North Carolina. 

They have had some unfriendly weather there 

and the local newspaper 

wrote an article about what folks were buying for supplies.

Potato Starch... Because you asked

I had several of you ask me last week about potato starch 

found in the recipe for Pasta Cordon Bleu. 

I wanted to let you know that if you can substitute corn starch.

I should have made that clear.

Please forgive me.

For the record, you usually can find potato starch among the gluten free items.

National Championship trophies, ice skating and Miss America

We had a great weekend here at the blog plantation! 

Friday, Lord Breland and I 

ran some errands and 

GOT TO SEE THIS!!

 at Bromberg's

Yes friends, that is THE trophy. The National Championship trophy won by our Crimson Tide. 

The official trophy is actually sitting on top of the University's pedestal.

The crystal elephants are beautiful aren't they?

All the championships are engraved on the plaque.

They are selling this version for your personal collection

it is Waterford and beautiful!

We had lunch at the local coffee shop

yeah they are wonderful!

We got the Princess from school 

and learned that she made a 106 on her spelling test! 

WOW!!

We rounded the night out with pizza, game night, and a movie.

Saturday, we took the children ice skating

The Prince had been trying to tape spoons

to his shoes

to make ice skates at home 

so actually having them on THRILLED HIM!

 

The Princess kept taunting her Daddy

Who finally joined her on the ice.

Even if he played the whole time

 

The Prince just sat on the Alabama Hockey Team"s rink

and dreamed of the future

Then the children had a C A R meeting

(children of the American Revolution)

where the Princess gave a report on The Pony Express

I enjoyed seeing dear friends

 

Then the Princess and I watched (with broken hearts)

The Miss America Pagent

Our hopes had been that our dear sweet 

Liz Cochran

who is the reigning 

Miss Alabama

 

would win.

She is from our little city.

Sadly it was not to be.

So needless to say,

today we rested and lounged around

in front of the fireplace in our jammies. 

 Can't wait to hear about your weekend!
